The breakdown problem in a random system is investigated by numerical simula-tion for a network of distributed conductance The breakdown voltages are studied inthe different conductance configurations. The mean breakdown strength showsanomalous size dependence given by< L.>QC 1 / ((In [3)' for L (the linear dimensionof the network). The exponent y depends upon a degree of non-uniformity of thesystem and gives an information on the critical event of the breakdown. For the caseof a comparatively homogeneous network the micro-crack nucleation is the criticalevent of a breakdown. In such a random resistor network funnel defects act as the ap-propriate critical defects. On the other hand, in the case of strongly disordered systemthe critical event in a breakdown is attributed to groxvth of cracks.[fracture, simulation, fuse network, crack, breakdown votage, size effect, ran- l[ dom systeml
