The W(001) surface with adsorbed hydrogen is studied at low coverages near thereconstruction transition temperature on the basis of the theoretical model proposedby Lau and Ying. It is shown in the mean field approximation that a narrow coexistence region appears between the two reconstructed surface phases at the directionalswitching transition (c(2 X 2)<11>=C(2 X 2)<10>). An effect of thermal fluctuation isqualitatively discussed.[adsorbate-induced reconstruction, H / W(001), directional switching transition, ll phase coexistence, first-order transitionl
