Soft Mode in the Incommensurate Phase of BaMnF_4

Raman spectra were investigated for BaMnF. to find soft modes. Two low-fre-quency, temperature-dependent modes were observed below the incommensuratestructural phase transition (T, -252K). The observed level repulsion and intensitytransfer are understood in terms of the anticrossing betweerr the two modes. Theseare attributable to the amplitude mode (amplitudon) and hard (optical phonon)mode. From the observation of one amplitudon, it is suggested that the incommen-surate distortion arises from the mode condensation at two ineommensurate wave vec-tors.[Raman scattering, soft mode, amplitudon, incommensurate structural phase l% transition, BaMnF., mode anticrossing%
