The principal values and the rotation angle of the optical indcatrix and theoptical birefringence of CsH,PG. have been measured at 589 nm as a functionof temperature both in the paraelectric and the ferroelectric phases. The principalvalues arc found to be n.=1.5O9, o,=l.515 and 77,=1.533 at room temperature,where n. is the value parallel to the Z>-axis. Rotation of the optical indicatrix withtemperature about the Z>-axis is within 1 ' between 100 K and 300 K. The spon-taneous birefringence determined for (010) plate by the usual procedure reachesa maximum at about 15 K below T., then becomes negative with decreasingtemperature. Similar behavior is found for (100) plate. It is found that theseanomalous behaviors of the spontaneous birefringence arc caused by the similaranomalous behavior in the spontaneous strain through the elastooptic coupling.
