Temperature Dependence of Optical Absorption near the Order-Disorder Phase Transition of Sudium Nitrate

The optical absorption spectrum of sodium nitrate, NaN0., has been measuredfor the wavelength range from 6000 A to 2000 A at temperatures t>etween 49.5'Cand 298.6'C. The optical absorption of the two absorption bands shows anomal-ous temperature dependence near the order-disorder phase transition of NaN03.Phenomenological relation between the energy gaps and the heat capacity hasbeen confirmed. Low energy tails of the two absorption bands have shifted tolower energy side with increasirtg temperature, and they have been found to obeythe Urbach rule within experimental error.
