The Transverse Effective Charges of the IV-VI Semiconductors

The quantum mechanical treatment of the crystal energy of the IV -Vl semi-conductors developed in our previous paper is extended so as to be applicableto the case in which there exists a relative tonic displacement corresponding tothe TO phonon at point F. It is shown that the tmusually large transverse effectivecharges in these crystals come partly from rather large electronic polarizabilitiesof their constituent ions and partly from covalent bonds contained partially inthe interatomic bonds in these crystals. The theory contains only one adjustableparameter concerning local field correction which is related with penetrationbetween nearest neighboring ions. Using its numerical value determined forPbS, we can explain the transverse effective charges of the IV -Vl semiconductorsquantitatively. The relation between Katayama -Kawamura's treatment and oursis discussed briefly.
