A Study of Amorphous Pd-Si Alloys by Mossbauer Effect of ^57Fe and X-Ray Diffraction

Amorphous Pd...-.-,Si,Fe, alloys with the composition of ,v=l5, 17.5, 20and ,r=0, 0.3, l in ate were investigated. Quadrupole splitting decreases withthe increase of silicon content and its extrapolated value a]?nost coincides withthat of crystalline Pd.Si(Fe). The result represents the similarity of local atomicconfiguration of the both structures. Isomer shift of the amorphous alloys is inthe range of 0.08 -0.13 mm/s and increases with silicon content, while that ofc-Pd.Si(Fe) is a negative value of -0.11 mm/s. The results are explained by thedifference in the shielding effect of "Fe nucleus in both phases.The amorphous alloys are stable even after 575 hours ageing at 200'C, andcrystallize to Pd3Si above 250'C. Our results are different from those obtainedby Masumoto et al. The different ageing behaviors may arise from the differencein the microstructure of the examined amorphous materials.
