Magnetization and Magnetic Reasonance of Antiferromagnetic MnCl_22H_2O

Magnetization and antiferromagnetic resonance studies were done on a singlec.'ystal of MnCl. - 2H.0 at liquid helium temperatures using pulsed magnetic fieldsup to 180 k0e. The spin-flop phenomenon was observed at 30.2:E0.3 k0e undera field along the spin easy Z>-axis. Transition from antiferromagnetic to para-magnetic states was o bserved at 154 .J. 2, 142 4 2 and 152 ] 2 k0e when am externalfield was applied parallel to the a, b and c-axes, respectively. Antiferromagneticresonance absorptions were observed in the frequency range from 22 to 85 GHzand a zero-field frequency was determined to be 85.11 GHz. The antiferro-magnetic exchange field H. and the orthorhombic anisotropy fields H.. and I-I,g.due to the crystalline field constants D and E were found to be 7].711-1 k0e,6.0i0.3 k0e, 4.5:h0.5 k0e, respectively. It was also found that the second easyaxis is the o-axis.
