Analysis based on the boundary-layer theory is made on the unsteady viscous flow which takes place when a flat plate floating on the surface of a viscous fluid flowing with uniform velocity is suddenly stopped. The unsteady boundary-layer equation is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations by taking the limit R_t(=U^2t/ν)⇾∞, where U is the velocity of the uniform flow, ν the kinematic viscosity and t the time. It is shown that the position of the free surface downstream of the plate varies as x^<1/3> and t^<1/6>, where x is the distance measured from the trailing edge of the plate.
