A study is made of laminar viscous flow past a semi-infinite flat plate with finite thickness, set parallel to a uniform stream. An asymptotic solution of the Navier-Stokes equations is constructed on the basis of high-Reynolds-number approximations. The total drag coefficieent C_D for a flat Plate of thickness 2a immersed in a uniform flow U is shown to be given by C_D=-1/x+(1.328)/(R^<1/2>)(1+0.5419(logx)/x+O(1/x))+(2.326)/R(1+O(1/x)), where R=Ux^*/ν and x=x^*/a (x^* being the distance along the plate and ν the kinematic viscosity).
