An analysis is made of unsteady viscous flow induced by the impulsive motion of a finite flat plate, parallel to its length. The present paper is concerned with the flow period in which the steady Blasius flow is developing near the leading edge and the Rayleigh flow still remains on a large portion of the plate. A solution of the Navier-Stokes equations near the leading edge is constructed by means of matched asymptotic expansions, with the Blasius solution as a leading term.
