The stability of a current-carrying plasma in a strong longitudinal magnetic field, such as in Tokamak type devises, against the MHD and tearing instability is investigated. The growth rates of the MHD instability are computed numerically as eigen-values of the equation of motion, for several current distributions. The influence of the position of the conducting shell on the stability is also investigated.
