EXAFS Studies on the Local Structure of Phase Transition in Fe-Pt Invar Alloys. : I.Premartensitic Phenomenon

Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements were carried outon ordered and disordered Fe-PI alloys near the y-cx phase boundary in the ternpera-lure range 20-800 K. EXAFS spectra were analyzed by the method of Fine Adjust-ment Based on Model (FABM) proposed by Teo et al. , in order to deterrnine the localstructure with high precision. The interatomic distance of l't-Fe pair shows expan-sion below T. with decreasing temperature, which corresponcis quite well to the Invareffect, In the interatomic distance of Pt-Pt pair, anomalous expansion is observed,starting from a relatively higlt temperature. We regard it as first direct observation onthe local-structure change resulting from the premartensitic transformation. As forthe local-structure change, no essential difference is recognized between the orderedand disordered Fe-Pt alloys.
