The tunneling of the Wannier exciton from its metastable free state to thestable self-trar>r>ed state is described in the context of the multi-phonon nonradia-tive transition. The escane r>ath throush the adiabatic rote, ntial barrier is deter-mined bar a variational method : the tunnelins is assumed to occur along a trialinteraction mode, with its deuree of localization bein: the variational parameterdetermined so as to maximize the rate of the tunneling. The ratc is obtained as afunction of the exciton band width, cour>Jinx constants and the Wannier radius, and the tunneling is found to be more probable than the radiative annihilation ina wide range of these parameters. The rate is also found to depend exponentiallyon the band width and the Wannier radius, in agreement with the experimentalresults in alkali iodides and rare gas solids.
