The infrared and visible spectral shapes of optical absorjction ita a three dimensional chargedensity wrave (CDW) state of BaBiO3 (BBO) are theoretically sttudied by trsing an extendedPeierls-Htrbbard taaodel, so as to clatrify the direct and indirect exciton effects in tlais materiatl. For tluis ptrrpose we iuatrodtrce tlae adiabattic approxirnatiora f'or phottons and the Hartree-Fock?rpproxitmation for inter-electrora cotrlornlcic interactions. The electrota-laole correlatiora on tlaeBi atottas and flue classical fltrctuation of flue oxygen strb-Jarttice coordinate,'; are 21180 talcen intoaccottnt, so as to obtain exciton effects 2XS xx'ell as thernaal flttcttrations of' tl're lattice. The energysplitting dtre to CD 'AT f'ormatiota in the 6s 1.c;tnd of' Bi is [otrnd to be xxery large (2.0 eV), xvhen'eas, the uaairaizntrtta gap is t?atrch smaller (0.55 eV) than it. Tlais large optical gap appears in the visibleregion as a dotaainant peak of the optical condttctivity, arud it is naainly dtre to the direct exciton.XX7hile the stnaller gap appears in the iruf'r?rred region, and it is dtre to tlae indirect exciton. Thistheory xvell ?tgrees with tlae restrlts of recent optical experitnents on BaBiO3.
