Interaction of Oxygen Molecules with Surface Centers of UV-Irradiated MgO

Oxygen-surface interaction has been studied in an ultra high vacuum by meansof thermal desorption mass spectrometry, ESR, emission of after glow andthermoluminescence. During the 02 exposure of less than 10' L to UV-irradiatedMg0 powders, F; centers were found to decay following two monomolecularstaves and two tvr>es of OK centers were found to be formed. The activationenergy of the first decay was found to be 0.04 eV. The jumiruescence was alsofound to be ctuenched b>' the adsorr>tion of On. The chemisorbed Oi moleculesdesorbed thermally with activation energies of 0.83 and 1.10 eV. Through theestimation of the order of kinetics and activation energies, the interaction of 0.with F." is discussed as a diffusion-limited process causing charge transfer onsurfaces of Mg0.
