Electron Cyclotron Damping of Obliquely Propagating Bernstein Waves in Plasmas

The electron cyclotron damping of the Berstein waves propagating obliquely to a static magnetic field is studied. It is observed experimentally that the attenuation of these waves becomes very strong as soon as the angle of propagation to a static magnetic field departs appreciably from 90°, (k⫽≠0), and the wave frequency ω approaches the electron cyclotron frequency ω_c, Hence this increase of the demping is confirmed to be due to the electron cyclotron damping. The observed electron cyclotron damping arises from the resonance electrons whose parallel velocity υ_r(=(ω-ω)/k⫽) is several times as large as the thermal velocity of electrons υ_t, and becomes stronger as υ_r approaches υ_t. Further, exstence of these resonance electrons is clarified more clearly by injection of an electron beam. The increase and decrease of the damping occur by the electron beam whose velocity is, respectively, rather smaller and larger than υ_r.
