The interaction of transversely modulated electron beam with axially magnetized plasma is studied experimentally from a view point of ion heating. When the modulation frequency almost coincides with the ion cyclotron frequency, considerable of ions is observed up to 40 eV. This type of ion heating is found to be very effective in directions perpendicular to the axial magnetic beach, the excited waves tend to decay strongly and the associated heating of ions occurs as a result of the cyclotron resonances with atomic- and molecular-ions. The ion heating observed in the present study seems to be due to the cyclotron damping of the ion cyclotron waves excited intensively in the beam-plasma system.
