Electronic Absorption Spectrum of Ni^<2+> in CaO

Single crystals of Ni^<2+>-doped CaO were made by using a large solar furnace, and their transmittance was measured in infrared, visible, and ultraviolet regions. Eight absorption bands due to Ni^<2+> in CaO were observed extending from 5000 to 33300cm^<-1>. These bands were interpreted according to the theory of Liehr and Ballhausen, in which the spin-orbit coupling was taken into account. The observed bands showed a best fit with those calculated for four parameters F_2=1288cm^<-1>, F_4=92cm^<-1>, Dq=-565cm^<-1>, and λ=-250cm^<-1>.
