The Cholesteric Pitch and Its Temperature Dependence of Chiral Nematics Induced by Compounds Having 1-Methyl-Heptyloxy Group

The cholesteric pitch (P) and its temperature dependence (ΔP/ΔT) were studied for the chiral nematics induced by the compounds having 1-methyl-heptyloxy phenyl group. The ortho-substitution of methyl or halogen atoms to the 1 -methyl-heptyloxy phenyl group decreased P and increasedΔP/ΔT. An energy barriers for intra-chain rotation around chiral center of 1-methyl-heptyloxy phenyl group and a strength of nematic inter-molecular interaction were evaluated using an empirical molecular orbital calculating method. As the result, it was proposed that the conformational structure of 1-methyl-heptyloxy phenyl group predominantly controls P andΔP/ΔT for the present systems.
