Preferential Formation of Fe_<13>O_8 Clusters in a Reactive Laser Vaporization Cluster Source

Using time-of-flight mass spectrometry, we observed the I1'l2tSS abtnndance spectra of iron-oxideclusters produced in a reactive laser vaporization cluster sotmrce. Fej3Og is nauch naore abtmndantthan the other oxide clttsters. An ab initio calctrlation proposed the following strtrcture forFe)303: thirteen iron atoms form one atoun-centered tetragouaally-distorted fcc core and theeight oxygen atoms adsorb on the threefold sites of the core. There is a trend of stable iron-oxide clusters, FeOz(FezO). with x< 9, dvxring preparation at low oxygen flow rates.
