A stable structure of cholesteric liquid crystal thin film in a magnetic field is explored under the boundary condition that the film is strongly anchored at one surface and kept free at the other. It is shown that the system shows a series of frst order phase transitions. A step-wise change of helical pitch is obtained as a function of external magnetic field.
