Conformation of Polypeptide in Helix-Coil Transition Region

The conformation of polypeptides in helix-coil transition region is not Gaussian. In the present work an interrupted helix model of polypeptide chain is adopted in which random coil parts and rod-like helix parts are connected by universal joints alternately. The second and the fourth moments, <R^2> and <R^4>, are calculated. It is found that under certain conditions shallow minima appear in <R^2> and <R^4> at the transition region. From both of <R^2> and <R^4> the deviation from the Gaussian chain is calculated, and the polypeptide chain in the transition region is shown to have a conformation of swollen Gaussian type.
