The Synchronized Periodic Phenomenon in a Nonlinear Lattice Vibration

We consider a one-dimensional lattice with harmonic as well as quartic potential between nearest neighbors. When one mode is excited initially, an induction phenomenon is observed. The critical value η_c of the anharmonicity parameter η for the disappearance of the induction phenomenon was estimated previously by the stability region of the Mathieu function. The system, however, becomes quasi-periodic when η is larger than, but close, to η_c. This phenomenon is explained by a perturbation theory and by a qualitative argument based on the stability of the Mathieu function. This quasi-periodic phenomenon is a synchronized one, and the presence of a critical value of η for the vanishing of the synchronized periodic motion is suggested.
