It has been demonstrated by many investigators working on DNA-mediated transformation in bacteria that a genetic information resides in a part of the single strands of DNA molecules. The chemically prepared DNA entered into recipient cells, however, seems to have only a potentiality to be new genes unless a certain modification is provoked by the biological activity of cells. Instability of the intermediate stage of transformation is revealed under experimental conditions.
