CHEMICAL AND CLAY MINERALOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RED AND/OR YELLOW COLORED SOIL MATERIALS IN RELATION TO LITHOLOGY AND WEATHERING INDICES

Chemical and clay mineralogical characteristics of red and/or yellow colored soil materials were investigated in relation to their lithology and degree of weathering. A correlation analysis revealed close relationships between the weathering index (WI) and CEC_8 (r=-0.518), CEC_8/Clay (-0.657), Si_d/Al_d (the ratio of dithionite soluble Si to Al) (-0.606), percent variable charge (0.672), base saturation (-0.612), and Al_o/Al_d (the ratio of oxalate soluble Al to that of dithionite soluble one) (-0.432). On the other hand, the lithology index (LI) is correlated with the clay content (0.653), CEC_8 (0.555), oxalate and dithionite soluble Fe, Al, and Si contents. These results suggest that LI represents the characteristics related to the amount of clay, whereas WI represents those related to the nature of clay. The kind of clay mineral species predominating in a sample has a close relationship with WI, i.e., soils with a high WI are rich in Al-vermiculite and gibbsite and those with a low WI are dominated by vermiculite, illite, smectite, or its weathering products mixed with halloysite (7Å). The main process clarified here is the polymerization of hydroxy Al in the interlayer position accompanied by an increase of WI and it becomes the source material developing the variable charge.
