Reversible CO_2 Sorption by Soils : An Error Factor in the Measurement of Soil Respiration

The measurement of the rate of CO_2 evolution from soil is a convenient method for estimating the soil microbial activity. However, the interpretation of the data of CO_2 evolution is difficult, especially in soils with a high pH value, presumably due to the presence of carbonate. In a previous paper (Naganawa and Kyuma 1991), a model of CO_2 diffusion/sorption in soil for the measurement of CO_2 evolution in the field was described briefly in relation to the dependence of CO_2 evolution from soil on the CO_2 concentration in the chamber for the measurement. In this paper, we report that the CO_2 sorption by soils which may become an error factor in the measurement of CO_2 evolution from soil is reversible in the time scale of "h," and may be associated not only with the presence of carbonate in the soil water but also with CO_2 adsorption onto the soil particles.
