The effect of the interaciton of ions in the soil solution of Tottori sand dune soil on the nutrient uptake of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Great Lakes 366) was investigated in relation to the suppression of calcium and magnesium uptake under irrigation of a nutrient solution. High concentration of the nutrient solution brought about a high activity ratio of potassium to calcium and magnesium (a_k/√<a(Ca+Mg)> in the soil solution and resulted in the suppression of the calcium and magnesium uptake by lettuce. Also a high concentration of the nutrient solution brought about a low activity ratio of magnesium to calcium, which may account for the suppression of the magnesium uptake by lettuce. Plants grown at a high concentration of the nutrient solution showed severe tipburn symptoms on the leaves.
