Nutrient solution was applied by drip irrigation to tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill var. Houfuku) grown in sand dune soil in which the nutrient solution at two concentrations was irrigated at two rates. The availability of the nutrients was analyzed in relation to their mobility and dynamics in the soil. A relatively high concentration of the nutrient solution was favorable for the early growth of plants, although it induced salt injury subsequently. The composition of the drainage water was different from that of the nutrient solution in that the proportion of cations increased only for magnesium. The effect of the concentration and irrigation rate of the nutrient solution on the nutrient uptake by the plants was largest for phosphorus and decreased in the order: nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, suggesting that the mobility of the nutrients in sand dune soil influenced their availability. The magnesium uptake by the plants which was suppressed under high nutrient supply may have resulted from the inactivation of magnesium in the soil solution. This could also apply to calcium. The recovery rate of the nutrients decreased in the order: potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium. It decreased as the concentration and irrigation rate of the nutrient solution increased. The recovery rate for phosphorus was higher than that observed in sand dune soil culture.
