The changes in the ion composition of the xylem sap of rice (Oryza saliva L. cv. Koshihikari) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Saturn) subjected to short-term (up to 24 h) NaCl stress were investigated to evaluate the ion transport and nutritional and water status. The NaCl stress markedly affected the ion composition of the xylem sap of both species. A rapid and remarkable increase in the concentrations of K^+, Ca^<2+>, and Mg^<2+> and in those of Na^+ and Cl^- was recorded in rice and tomato, respectively. There was a considerable difference in the behavior of Na^+ and K^+ under NaCl stress in both species. In rice, the Na+ transport was restricted and the K^+ transport rapidly increased, which resulted in a high ability of osmotic adjustment and an adequate nutritional status, although the low ability of rice to restrict transpiration brought about a low water status. On the other hand, in tomato, the Na^+ transport rapidly increased and the K^+ transport decreased, which led to a low nutritional status, although Na^+ transported to the tops might have been diluted under an adequate water status by suppression of transpiration. It was concluded that the differences in the ion transport at the beginning of the NaCl stress were closely related to the differences in the response of the plant species to NaCl stress.
