Metabolism of oxamide-nitrogen in rice plant was investigated by a tracer experiment using ^<15>N-labelled oxamide, compared with the behavior of nitrogen from ammonium sulfate and urea. The amount of nitrogen absorbed by rice plant fed with oxamide was one-fifth of that by rice fed with ammonium sulfate and one-third of that by rice fed with urea. Absorbed oxamide translocated to shoots and accumulated mostly in the leaf blades during successive cultures with only water being supplied after treatment with ^<15>N-labelled oxamide, whereas the nitrogen after treatment with ammonium sulfate or urea translocated completely in plant. This behavior of oxamide was in agreement with the results obtained in the experiment using ^<14>C-labelled oxamide. In the leaf blade where oxamide accumulated, ^<15>N-abundance of the [ammonium+amide] fraction was higher followed by the neutral fraction containing oxamide, and a larger increase of ^<15>N-abundance in the [ammonium+amide] fraction than in the other fractions was observed after the culture, corresponding closely to the degradation of oxamide. Therefore, it was considered that oxamide-nitrogen was hydrolyzed to ammonium and then assimilated to amide, amino acid, and protein in this order by the same pathway as that for the roots of rice plant.
