The Significance of the Concept `Chaos'

Classical thermodynamics was constructed with the awareness of molecular chaos in the background. As an analogy it is proposed to construct a `soft phenomenology', or `information dynamics', on the basis of `macroscopic chaos'. After examining the anology and differences between macroscopic chaos and molecular chaos, it is suggested that the macroscopic chaos is neither special nor exceptional, but in broader perspective a rather general and fundamental phenomenon in physics. In relation to the recent challenge posed in physics by the kinds of soft system conventionally treated in biology, it is pointed out that the concept of macroscopic chaos is essential in widening the views of physical science.
