A mechanism for the trapping of charged helium ions by a vortex line in liquid He^4 is investigated, assuming a short range repulsive helium-ion interaction and a long range polarization force on the helium atoms. The upper bound for the effective mass of the ion to be trapped by the vortex line for a given value of the ion radius and the lower bound of the ion radius for a given value of the effective mass of the ion are obtained. From this a qualitative explanation of the fact that only negative ions are trapped in vortex lines in rotating liquid He^4 and of how a positive ion may be trapped as well as a negative ion in the case of a vortex ring is suggested.
