Phase Transition in a One-Dimensional Gas with a Long-Range Linear Attractive Potential

A simple model of condensation in a one-dimensional system is presented. In this model, each hard-sphere molecule in the system is assumed to interact with N_0 neighbors with linear attractive potentials. for a fixed N_0, there appears no phase transition, but when N_0 is varied in such a way to minimize the free energy, a phase transition appears. The results, which are obtained by an elementary method, agree completely with what Kac, Uhlenbeck and Hem-mer obtained based on an exponential potential.
