A nuclear mass formula in which the nuclear compressibility is taken into account is constructed. It is derived from the Weizsacker-Bethe formula by regarding the coefficients of the volume, surface and symmetry terms as functions of density and by replacing the Coulomb term by an approximate Coulomb energy calculated on a compressible trapezoidal model. The density dependences of these functions are chosen so that the effect of hardcore interactions can be taken into account. Several constraints are imposed on the parameters from theoretical considerations; and the values of the remaining parameters are fixed by use of the gross features of experimental data on the position of the β-stability line, nuclear masses on it, two-proton separation energies, nuclear sizes and isotope shifts. The formula obtained agrees with experimental data only moderately, but can be used as a starting point for studying nuclear compressibility.
