Flavor U(1)_f-Symmetry Breaking and Generation Mixing : Particles and Fields

The mechanism of generation mixing is investigated on the basis of an extension of recently proposed flavor-symmetry hypothesis. The generation mixing in the quark sector is reduced to possible existence of a flavor U(1)_f-symmetry breaking Higgs boson which couples to the color indices of quarks, where U(1)_f is defined as U(1)_f=Π^3_<i,j>U(1)_<qi>U(1)_<lj>. Then, properties of a semi-empirical mass matrix are examined on the basis of our model, where possible existence of a certain kind of similarity between the leptons and quarks is supposed. Our model can realize the observed mass spectrum of leptons and quarks to possess a lepton-quark symmetry, provided that we assume the neutrino-Higgs coupling constants are hidden due to absence of ν_R. Alternative possibility due to "see-saw" mechanism is also discussed.
