A mapping theory is proposed for the interacting boson model 3 (IBM-3) describing a subset of states of neutrons and protons with good isospin. Compact operator representations of nucleon pairs coupled to J=0, T=1 and J=2, and T=1 in terms of the corresponding boson operators are derived from approximate analytical expressions for the matrix elements of these nucleon pairs. The method takes into account the effects of the Pauli principle between nucleon pairs. The boson expressions obtained contain important factors which depend on the number and isospin of the s- and d-bosons.
