A Variational Theory for the Periodic Anderson Model : Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics

We propose a variational method for describing the ground state properties of the orbitally nondegenerate periodic Anderson lattice model with strong interaction. The effective mass, ground state energy and the charge and spin susceptibilities are calculated. One-site approximation in the Kondo regime leads to magnetic instability. Our results are in agreement with those of Rice and Ueda. In the fluctuating-valence regime the paramagnetic phase is stable and the Wilson ratio is greater than 1.
