The dual preon model with a quasi-simple gauge group of G=SO(10)&otime;SO(10) is studied. A global symmetry U_X(1) required by a dual pair of preon multiplets can be used to determine the number of generations, though it may break above the scale Λ_<hc> of preon confinement. At Λ_<hc> six generations of 16's with preon configuration mixing are obtained for quarks and leptons. An invisible composite axion emerges by spontaneous breaking of U_X(1) and QCD effects.
