On the Landau-Type Theory of First Order Phase Transition

The Landau-type expansion of the free energy functional is generally and rigorously formulated for an asymmetric model which includes a cubic interaction of strength b. On the basis of this expansion we investigate how the phase transition of first order depends on b, the range of molecular interaction, the dimensionality and other parameters. We employ the selfconsistent Hartree-Fock approximation for quantitative study. There exists a threshold of b for the first order phase transition to take place. We discuss the dependence of the threshold on the range and the dimensionality with particular attention.
