It is shown that the exact Bethe-Salpeter equation does not determine higher excited levels of the hydrogen atom in principle, by analyzing the asymptotic behaviour of two-particle amplitudes associated with photon co-ordinates at large distances. In connection with this analysis, however, an approximate method of treating the problem of excited states is given. Some related problems are also discussed briefly.
