Vertex Functions at Large Momentum Transfer. I : Exponential Decrease of the Wu-Yang Type

A discussion is given of the asymptotic behaviour of the vertex function at large momentum transfer in the framework of relativistic field theory. The discussion makes use of the Jost-Lehmann-Dyson representation, and the vertex function is shown to fall off exponentially if one tries to transform the weight function by a Hankel inverse formula and introduce appropriately a constant ρ_0>0. An attempt is also made on similar grounds to deduce the exponential decrease of the absorptive part of the vertex function for large time-like momentum. It is finally suggested that the presence of nonzero ρ_0, which has the dimension of length squared, implies a violation of customary locality.
