When mechanical force is applied to rat molar osteoclast recruitment is promoted in the alveolar bone, partictularly in interdental septum. Using this experimental model, role of adhesion melecules, ICAM-1 LFA-a, in osteoclase differentioation is examined immunohistochemically. The appearance of TRAP-positive osteoclasts and their mononuclear precurcers because evident 6 hours after force application and their numbers were increased with incresing time. Simultaniously with thie event, the expression of ICAM-1 in the vascular endothelial cells and neighboring mononuclear cells was vident, beting followd by increased number of LFA-1-positive cells. Co-expression of ICAM-1 and TRAP is also observed.
