Now, a museum community has reached at the decisive crossroad in the long lasting depression. For example, national museums in the main cities, such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara, are to be incorporated as the independent administrative corporations from April 2001. Although those museums have been dominant in their community so far, they still have to get a by-blow of an administrative reform. On the other hand, Japan has plenty of museums founded by local governments. Those regional museums must also seriously suffer from this long lasting recession. Then, we should take the proper steps for the problems before incorporating or abolition of museums, as people say "forewarned, forearmed". In conclusion, we should change in the policies from closed management within the museum as in the past through opened one participated by the citizens. Some ideas about museum activities in future will be mentioned with a couple of examples.
