The availability of university museums is extremely limited in Japan compared to other countries. The primary cause lies in the absence of the legal foundations for a university museum from the viewpoint of functions. Patiently waiting for the unknown day when they will be legislated, however, will not get us anywhere. Now it is time for the existing university museums to vigorously launch their original tasks and demonstrate why they are needed. Actual examples illustrate the specific way a museum should perform its functions. The consequence is the conclusion: " The museum is an institution whose mission it is to serve as a bridge between its respective branch of learning (science) and the citizens at large, and simultaneously between the university and them." In other words, a museum is an indispensable social educational institution for a university that claims to be an open establishment. A university museum can be defined as a forum to feed back studies conducted at its university to society and at the same time as a source of information to the public on the school and related fields of knowledge.
