This paper is the first of a series which is the results of research projects conducted in International Cooperation Practicum, a special subject of Faculty of International Studies, Utsunomiya University. The students visited overseas project sites and headquarters of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) during summer vacation to collect project documents, interview fieldworkers and to take photographs. Suncokret, a local NGO in Croatia, employs social and psychological approaches to refugees and internally displaced persons at a refugee camp in cooperation with volunteers, both local and from abroad. The methods include talking and playing games with refugees to ease the pain and depression and harmonize with the people of other nations. Suncokret holds a workshop of knitting and dressmaking for female refugees to facilitate an interchange with others and local people and making products for their own use or for sale. The methods of Japan Emergency NGOs (JEN) which works in former Yugoslavia are to provide jobless returnees with semi-professional skills and those with business expertise with capital materials such as pigs, chain saw, and sewing machines and micro credit, respectively. JEN also sponsors vocational training programs such as hairdressing, dressmaking, auto repair, plumbing, electrical work, and masonry which contribute to the daily life and reconstruction of the areas. The methods of National Institution of Social Care and Vocational Training (Beito Atofal As Somoud), a local NGO working in Lebanon, are to provide preschool education to Palestinian children at kindergartens which have been established at refugee camps and consultation with the parents of children who are badly off or need mental care. The curriculum contains handicrafts, traditional dance, and Palestinian history.
