• Synopsis: In this study, we discuss the use of chat rooms for English learning. Firstly we refer to the good points and advantage of the use of chat rooms. There we find that a chat room has many advantages for English learning in terms of automaticity, intrinsic motivation, risk taking, strategic investment, the language-culture connection and communicative competence. Secondly we also look at the negative aspects of chat room use such as a problem of infrastructure, and the low computer literacy. With these critical discussions, two practical use of a chat room for English lesson are proposed in this study.
