Today, we don't think much about death in our daily life. We are too concerned with activity and dont' have value such thought. But is that really goot? The porpose of this paper is to make clear the relation to the art and the attitude towards life and death, through analyzing Shiki Masaoka's life and literature. Since Shiki Masaoka had a hemorrhage of his lungs in 22 year in Meiji. He contracted tuberculosis, an incurable diserse at that time, and he lived stunding prepared for death, for thirteen years. At the first, Shiki's thought of life and the death is superficial kowledge from books. But after some experiences as a war correspondent, falling into a critical condition, being rejected his proposal to continue his work of literature by Kyoshi Takahama; Shiki had the deep thought of life and death. Shiki developed his own views on the cycles of life and death in the cosmos. This self-consciousness make him work in literary, as the task, and get him to create the literary works in the communication with all of the cosmos. According to these experiences, Shiki's works changed. At first, his works tended to descrive nature in terms of his feelings, he came to express his own inner world. Two to three years before his death, he described the world around him and daily life which express complate resignation he discovered a joy in life rather than escaping from death. He got his energy by finding the beauty in nature and the lives of all and expressing this in his works. After all, we can find the relathion between the art and thought of life and death. We could see them as the trace of men's mature.
