• The aim of this paper is to make the thinking of Shiki Masaoka clear. How world did he open? As a result of the analyses of Shiki's actions, we can see the important meanings of them. He was a reformer of two Japanese traditional poems, the Haiku and the Tanka. One of his works is to have changed the people's senses to the Japanese traditional poems, the Haiku and the tanka. That is to say, he insisted to the people to see the matter by their own sensibilities. And also, he proposed to sketch the nature in the way of making poems. His proposition is not only to sketch the nature arround him, but also to depict his mind. Therefore, there are two men in himself, one is a man looking at the nature and the other is one looking at himself. Shiki opened the thinking in conjunction, too. The thinking in conjunction of Shiki means that the people discuss the opinions about the Haiku and the Tanka each other and at last they understand other's opinions. Shiki had an eye to the human's subjective attitude and establishment of "self", of one's own thinking way, through the revolution of the Haiku and the Tanka. It may be said that Shiki opened the new thinking way in the period of Maiji. In those days, the variouse thoughts came from Western countries. And some of Shiki's insistences based on the thought in Western. Nowadays, we often here about the probrems that we must reexamin the knowledges of modern age Shiki's thinking may be a epitome of "the knowledge of modern age". I think we may be able to touch a part of " the knowledge of modern age " through investigation of Shiki.
