A Corpus-Based Study of the Selection of Nominalised Forms

The present study examines the factors involved in the choice made when one of the three transitive-verb nominalisation forms is used. (These can be exemplified by the introduction of a new tax, the introducing of a new tax, and introducing a new tax.) Forms of -tion/-ment/etc.+of+O, -ing+of+O and -ing+O where nouns derive from the same verb are extracted from the LOB corpus. Factors involved in the choice of the form are considered and examples classified accordingly. The results obtained indicate that besides aspectual difference and 'action'/'result' differences in the derivative nouns, other factors are also involved, concerned with phrase structure, discourse structure, and grammatical functions of the nominalised form.
